I was at home. I had just gotten out of the shower, was in my pajamas, and ready for bed. My husband had been drinking. He was really drunk at this point. I tried to stop him from leaving, but he left anyway. Four minutes later, he called me. I answered. He was yelling, “Open the door! Open the door now!!!” I quickly ran to open the front door. He said, “I crashed into a house. Come see.” I was speechless. I grabbed my slippers and a coat to follow him. It was dark. The next thing that happened was a very strong person grabbed both of my arms, twisted them behind my back, handcuffed me, and then slammed me down on the trunk of the police car. I was kept in the backseat for over an hour. The police kept coming back and asking me the same questions. Finally, one officer said, “Your husband is saying YOU were driving and YOU crashed into the house. I smell alcohol on him and not you. I don’t think you were even here. He’s dressed to go out, and you’re dressed like you’re about to go to bed.”

Just then, a woman from the house that had been hit came out. She looked shocked and angry. She told the police that she had seen everything that happened and insisted that my husband was the one driving. But then, she looked at me and recognized me… it was my best friend from high school who had gone missing, and whom I had lost contact with many years ago.
It turned out that this friend had moved into the neighborhood and happened to witness the accident. She not only confirmed that my husband was driving but also provided footage from her home’s security camera that clearly showed what had happened. The police immediately changed their statement, and my husband was not only charged with DUI but also with giving a false statement and intentionally trying to blame someone else.
As for me, I not only got out of trouble but was also reunited with a close friend I had lost contact with long ago. This was an ending that I could never have imagined. My husband was in complete shock and couldn’t believe what was happening. He didn’t expect that his lies would lead to him being exposed and losing support from all sides.
So, AITA for not taking the fall for my husband? He’s still furious with me for not saying that I was the one driving. He says it would have made more financial sense if I had taken the fall so we wouldn’t have to pay the $10,000 fine for the DUI. It’s making me feel like I’m going crazy. Please help.
